Diogo Gomes: Portuguese Mariner and Explorer

Diogo Gomes was a renowned Portuguese navigator and explorer who served under the patronage of Prince Henry the Navigator. He played a significant role in expeditions that ventured along the coasts of Gambia and Senegal.

Expeditions and Discoveries

In 1460, together with the Genoese navigator António da Noli, Gomes is believed to have discovered some of the Cape Verde Islands. He also participated in a military campaign alongside Gil Eanes, further contributing to the exploration of the Atlantic coast.

Martin Behaim's Account

German cartographer Martin Behaim documented Gomes's recollections, dictated towards the end of his life. This account, known as "Diário de Diogo Gomes," provides valuable insights into the geographical discoveries made by the Portuguese during the 15th century.

Uncertain Demise

The exact date of Gomes's death remains uncertain. Some research suggests he passed away in 1485, while others, including Peter Russell, contend that he lived until at least 1499. Documentary evidence indicates that he was deceased by 1502, as an indulgence for his soul was recorded as being paid by his widow.
