Early Life and InfluencesDirk Martens, a renowned German actor, was born on July 2, 1964, in Mülheim an der Ruhr. Raised with his twin brother, young Martens was drawn to theater and often cast as princes. Inspired by Barbie dolls and the pop duo "Cindy and Bert," he developed a fascination with French singer Mireille Mathieu.
Theater and Film Career
Martens' acting journey began on the stages of Düsseldorf, Zurich, and Munich. In the late 1980s, he performed in Goethe's "Egmont" and "Faust" in Bonn. The 1990s marked his transition to film, with debut appearances in "Kommissar Rex" and "EquilibriUM."
Over the years, Martens became known for his portrayal of complex villains, psychopaths, and fascists in German and international films. He starred in "The Conspirator," "The Ballad of the Bomber," and the Russian series "Remaining Alive." In his latest work, he lent his talents to the comedy series "Svati-7."
Personal Life and Business Ventures
Martens identifies as gay. In 2003, he opened a self-service laundry in Cologne with his partner, which became the subject of a documentary. After their relationship ended, Martens relocated to Berlin and pursued his business aspirations solo.
Freddie Leck: The Laundry by an Actor
In 2008, Martens established "Freddie Leck," a unique laundry in Berlin's tourist-heavy Neukölln district. With its vintage wallpaper, photos of Hemingway and Mandela, and classical music, the laundry resembles a café. Customers socialize, read, and enjoy refreshments while their clothes are cleaned.
Martens takes pride in maintaining high standards, personally attending to customers and overseeing the laundry's operations. He has published an autobiography, "Nicht jeder Fleck muss weg," and owns an online detergent store, as well as a Tokyo branch of his business.
Private Life and Current Projects
Despite his public image, Martens prefers solitude. He avoids parties, social gatherings, and lunchtime hangouts with colleagues.
Currently, Martens performs in Berlin and tours Germany with his own stage program. He continues to appear in films, including the Russian television series "Nachal'nik Razvedki" and the detective miniseries "Chernobyl," where he plays a supporting role.
