Soviet and Russian Pop Group: Discoteka Avariya
Foundation and Early YearsDiscoteka Avariya, a Soviet and Russian pop band, was established on June 5, 1990. Originally known for its dance music with humorous lyrics, the band shifted towards pop music in the mid-2000s.
The band's founders were members of the Ivanovo City Komsomol Headquarters (GKS), Alexei Ryzhov, and Nikolai Timofeev. They started as disc jockeys, organizing discotheques at local clubs. Their first director was Andrey Vaganov, and their early names included "Intervyu" and "Ognetushitel."
Breakthrough and Success
In 1997, Discoteka Avariya released its debut album, "Tantuy so Mnoy," which brought them initial popularity in the Ivanovo region. After joining forces with Alexei Serov, they gained further recognition in 1999 by collaborating with the record label "Soyuz."
The group's cover of the song "Ty Kinula" by the Belarusian band Lyapis Trubetskoy became a major hit. Their song "Novogodnyaya" also gained widespread popularity, especially in the summer of 2000.
International Success and Awards
Discoteka Avariya established itself as a force in the Russian pop scene with the release of the album "Manyaki" in 2001, which won the "Album of the Year" award at the IV Annual Ceremony of the Russian Phonoindustry Recording Industry. They also participated in advertising campaigns and had several successful singles, including "Nebo" and "Survy Reep."
In 2002, the band received the "Best Russian Act" award at the MTV Europe Music Awards in Barcelona. They won multiple awards at the Muz-TV Awards, including "Best Dance Project" and "Best Pop Band." Discoteka Avariya also received numerous Golden Gramophone and Song of the Year awards.
Personnel Changes and Post-Zukov Era
After the tragic passing of Oleg Zhukov in 2002, Discoteka Avariya briefly suspended its activities. However, they resumed with the release of the maxi-single "KH. KH. KH. I R. N. R." and the successful single "Nebo."
In 2012, Nikolai Timofeev left the band due to creative differences, leading to legal disputes over the use of his voice on the band's recordings. Discoteka Avariya recruited a new vocalist, Anna Khokhlova, and continued to release popular songs, including "Ya Lyublyu Tebya," "Moher," "Fantasyor," and "Welcome to Russia."
Recent Activities
Despite Khokhlova's departure in 2020 due to pregnancy, Discoteka Avariya remains one of Russia's most popular pop bands. They released the single "Alyona" in 2020 and continue to perform live.
