Biography of Dixie Dunbar

Dixie Dunbar was an American dancer and actress. She was born Christina in Montgomery, Alabama, and grew up in Atlanta, Georgia. At a young age, she began taking dance lessons, which revealed her exceptional talent. Her mother sent her to New York to continue her training, and it was there that she adopted the stage name "Dixie."

Dixie initially worked with big concerts, nightclubs, and restaurants before breaking into the film industry in 1934. She appeared in George White's "Scandals" and made her Broadway debut in "Life Begins at 8:40" alongside Ray Bolger and Bert Lahr. Soon after, Dixie caught the attention of Twentieth Century-Fox studio, and she signed a contract that provided her with both dancing and acting roles.

Some of Dixie's notable films include "Pigskin Parade," "Girls' Dormitory," "Sing, Baby, Sing," "Life Begins in College," "Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm," "One in a Million," "Walking Down Broadway," and "Alexander's Ragtime Band." Despite her talent, she felt dissatisfied with the lack of substantial roles and eventually returned to dancing.

In 1940, Dixie met Gene Snyder, one of the directors of the Rockettes, a dance ensemble from Radio City Music Hall. They married, and she gradually ended her dancing career. From 1949 to 1951, Dixie only appeared in television commercials, where she danced in a costume that resembled a cigarette pack, hiding her figure from head to toe.

In 1953, Dixie separated from her husband. She worked briefly in television before retiring. By the late 1970s, she had almost lost her vision due to glaucoma, and in 1991, after a series of heart attacks, Dixie Dunbar passed away.
