Record-breaking swimmer on a giant pumpkin
Dmitri Galitzine, a resident of Hackney, London, is a record-breaking swimmer who embarked on a unique adventure by swimming across the Solent strait on a giant pumpkin. Inspired by the pumpkin regattas in Canada, Galitzine decided to use a massive pumpkin as a means of transportation.
Achieving a new world record
On October 24, 2013, Galitzine successfully crossed the Solent strait, which separates the southern coast of Great Britain from the Isle of Wight, on a 500kg pumpkin raft. It took him a total of two hours to complete the journey, setting a new world record. The giant pumpkin was generously provided by farmer Mark O'Hanlon, who had previously gained fame for his impressive pumpkins, winning the national pumpkin contest in 2004.
Technical details and preparation
To ensure a successful crossing, Galitzine equipped the pumpkin with a small outboard motor that allowed him to reach speeds of 1-2 knots. Pumpkins are naturally buoyant and water-resistant, making them an ideal choice for a floating vessel. Prior to the journey, all seeds and flesh were removed from the 500kg pumpkin to reduce weight.
