Early Life and Education
Dmitry Abramovich Aksharumov was born into a musical family in Kharkiv, Ukraine. He graduated from the Nikolaev Cavalry School in St. Petersburg and went on to study at the St. Petersburg Conservatory from 1884 to 1885. There, he received instruction in violin from Leopold Auer and music theory from Alexander Rubets. Aksharumov later honed his skills in Vienna, studying violin with Jacob Dont and theory with Robert Fuchs.
Early Career and Symphony Orchestra
Aksharumov began concertizing in Vienna, Moscow, and the Baltic provinces in 1890. In 1895, he settled in Poltava and founded a symphony orchestra, which began giving concerts in the city from 1898 onward. Under Aksharumov's direction, the orchestra embarked on a major five-month concert tour throughout Russia in 1903, performing over 50 concerts and featuring cellist Mikhail Bukinik.
Musical Leadership in Poltava
Concurrently with his orchestra, Aksharumov also led the Poltava branch of the Imperial Russian Musical Society from 1899 and the music classes affiliated with it from 1902. In 1904, these classes were transformed into a music school.
Founding the Voronezh State Symphony Orchestra
In 1925, Aksharumov founded and became the first artistic director of the Voronezh State Symphony Orchestra, a prestigious ensemble that continues to perform today.
