Jean-Pierre Zéguedine-Amillakhvari: A Hero of the French Resistance
Born into a Georgian princely family in Russia, Jean-Pierre Zéguedine-Amillakhvari fled to France with his family after the Soviet-Georgian war.
Military Career
In 1924, Zéguedine-Amillakhvari enrolled in the prestigious École Militaire de Saint-Cyr. Subsequently, he joined the French Foreign Legion and fought in operations in southern Morocco.
World War II
During World War II, Zéguedine-Amillakhvari served in various theaters of war, including equatorial Africa and the Arctic Circle as part of the French expeditionary corps in the Norwegian campaign. After evacuating to Britain, he joined the Free French Forces and fought in Africa and Syria.
North African Campaign
In 1942, Zéguedine-Amillakhvari participated in the Allied North African campaign in Libya, where he displayed exceptional bravery and leadership.
Tragic End
Tragically, Zéguedine-Amillakhvari lost his life on October 24, 1942, during the Second Battle of El Alamein. He was posthumously awarded the Croix de Guerre and the Legion of Honor.
Legacy
Zéguedine-Amillakhvari's memory lives on as a symbol of courage and sacrifice. His brother, Constantine Amillakhvari, also served in the Foreign Legion and fought against Bolshevism on the Eastern Front.
