Dmitry Nikolaevich Zeiliger
Personal LifeDmitry Nikolaevich Zeiliger was born in Tiraspol, Russian Empire, on March 26, 1864, into a Jewish merchant family.
Education
Zeiliger completed his studies at the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics of Novorossiysk University in Odessa in 1887. In 1891, he earned a master's degree in applied mechanics with a dissertation on the mechanics of a self-similarly deformable body. The following year, he was appointed assistant professor in the Department of Mechanics.
Career
In 1894, Zeiliger obtained his doctorate in applied mechanics from Moscow University for his dissertation on the theory of motion of a similarly deformable body. In 1895, he was appointed extraordinary professor at Kazan University, and in 1899, he rose to the rank of ordinary professor and head of the Department of Mechanics.
Innovative Initiatives
In 1910, Zeiliger established the first aeronautical circle at Kazan University. He also played a pivotal role in the organization of aviation education in Kazan, leading to the establishment of the Kazan Aviation Institute.
Setbacks and Re-emergence
Zeiliger faced setbacks due to his political views and was dismissed from Kazan University in 1914. He taught at Petrograd University until 1917, when he returned to Kazan University.
Contribution to Mechanics and Mathematics
Zeiliger's research focused on theoretical mechanics and the complex geometry of ruled space. He developed the foundations of screw calculus, explored the mechanics of self-similarly deformable systems, and contributed to the theory of dual numbers. In 1934, he published a monograph on complex ruled geometry, applying the concepts of screw calculus to kinematics.
Legacy
Zeiliger made significant contributions to the field of mechanics, particularly in the areas of theoretical mechanics and complex geometry. His work laid the groundwork for advancements in aeronautical engineering and other disciplines.
Honors and Recognition
In 1927, Zeiliger was awarded the title of Honored Scientist of the RSFSR for his work in linear ruled geometry.
