Biography of Dmitry Fomin
Dmitry Fomin is a Soviet and Russian volleyball player and coach. He was born on January 21, 1968, in Sevastopol. Fomin started playing volleyball in Balaklava under the guidance of Anatoliy Ivanovich Podolsky. He began his professional career in 1986 with the Kiev-based team "Lokomotiv," where he played for three seasons.
Club Career
In 1989, Fomin transferred to CSKA Moscow, where he also spent three seasons. During his time with CSKA, Fomin became a two-time champion of the USSR and won the Super Cup of Europe. From 1992 to 2003, Fomin played for international clubs, spending ten seasons in Italy. He initially signed a contract with the volleyball club "Porto Ravenna" in Ravenna and played three seasons there, becoming the Super Cup of Europe champion once again and winning two Champions Cups.
In 1996, Fomin joined "Sisley" in Treviso, where he played until 2002. His collection of awards and titles significantly expanded during his time with the team, including three Italian championship titles, one Italian Cup, two Champions Cups, and the Cup of the European Volleyball Confederation.
Fomin ended his playing career in Russia but spent a year in Japan before his return, playing for the club "Toray Arrows" in Mishima during the 2002/03 season. In the last three seasons of his career, from 2003/04 to 2005/06, he played for "Dynamo-Tattransgaz" in Kazan, becoming a bronze medalist in the Russian Championship and winning the Russian Cup.
National Team Career
Fomin made his debut for the USSR national team in 1991. From 1993 to 1998, he played for the Russian national team and participated in 119 matches, scoring 905 points and completing 1857 serves. In 1991 and 1993, Fomin also represented the "All-Star" world team in matches against Italy and Brazil.
Coaching Career
After retiring as a player in 2006, Fomin became the head coach of the women's team "Dynamo" in Moscow for the 2006/07 season. From the fall of 2007, he served as the general manager and head coach of the men's team CSKA, and later worked as the head coach of "Kuzbass" in Kemerovo (June 2009 - November 2010) and "Enisey" in Krasnoyarsk (July 2011 - March 2012).
