Biography of Domenico Siniscalco
Domenico Siniscalco was born in Turin and is an economist by education. He has held various important positions within the Italian Ministry of Finance. He has also served as a professor at the University of Turin, the University of Cambridge, and Johns Hopkins University in the United States.
Appointment as Minister of Economy and Finance
For two weeks, the second most important position in the Italian government, Minister of Economy and Finance, remained vacant. Finally, a candidate was found, and 50-year-old Domenico Siniscalco was appointed as the Minister. Prior to this appointment, he had been serving as the Director General of the same ministry since September 2001. His predecessor, Giulio Tremonti, a representative of the "Forza Italia" movement, resigned due to sharp disagreements within the ruling center-right coalition led by Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi. The crisis was provoked by the leader of the National Alliance, Gianfranco Fini, who threatened to withdraw his party from the coalition. In an attempt to appease the rebellious Fini, the Prime Minister offered him the position of Minister, but he declined. As a result, Berlusconi himself had to temporarily assume the responsibilities of the Minister.
Professional Achievements
Apart from his political career, Siniscalco has made significant contributions to the field of economics. He has led the Enrico Mattei Foundation, established by Italy's largest oil and gas company, ENI. He was also a member of the group of economic advisors to the left-centrist government led by Giuliano Amato. Additionally, Siniscalco has worked as an economic advisor for the European Commission.
