Donna Donatella Tesei: A Trailblazing Italian Politician

Donna Donatella Tesei is an Italian politician who has served as the President of Umbria since 2019. Her journey to this prominent position is marked by a series of accomplishments and groundbreaking achievements.

Early Life and Education

Born in Foligno, Italy, Tesei attended the Federico Frezzi Classical High School. She went on to pursue a law degree at the University of Perugia.

Legal Career

After graduating in 1982, Tesei began her legal career as a trainee in Spoleto. In 1984, she was admitted to the Spoleto Bar Association and specialized in cassation proceedings from 1999 onwards. Between 2001 and 2002, she served as Deputy Chair of the Spoleto Bar Association Examination Commission.

Political Debut

Tesei's foray into politics began in 2009 when she became the first woman and first center-right representative elected as Mayor of Montefalco. Her successful re-election in 2014 with 62.8% of the votes cemented her popularity.

Entry into the Senate

In 2018, Tesei ran for the Italian Senate in the Ternino single-member district, supported by a coalition that included the Northern League, Forza Italia, Fratelli d'Italia, and the "Noi con l'Italia – UDC" list. She garnered 38.54% of the votes, securing her seat in the Upper House of the Italian Parliament.

Governorship of Umbria

Tesei's political ascent continued in 2019 when she led a center-right coalition to victory in the Umbrian regional elections. The Northern League received 36.9% of the votes, while Tesei's bloc achieved a total of 57.5%. The Democratic Party, the main opposition, secured only 22.3% of the vote.

Inauguration and Senate Resignation

On November 11, 2019, Tesei was officially sworn in as the President of Umbria, succeeding Fabio Paparelli, who had served as the interim regional governor after the resignation of Catiuscia Marini. Shortly after, on December 2, 2019, she resigned from her Senate seat to focus solely on her new role.
