Early Career and Transfer to Roma
Doni began his professional football career in 1999 at Botafogo (Ribeirão Preto). After brief stints with Corinthians (59 appearances in two years) and Santos, he joined Cruzeiro but failed to establish himself as a regular starter.
In 2005, Doni moved to Juventude and quickly became the team's first-choice goalkeeper. His impressive performances caught the attention of Italian giants Roma, who acquired him on August 31st, the final day of the summer transfer window.
Success at Roma and International Debut
Initially, Doni faced competition from Italian youth international Gianluca Curci but eventually displaced him as Roma's starting goalkeeper. During the 2007/08 season, he emerged as one of Serie A's top shot-stoppers.
Doni made his debut for the Brazilian national team on June 5th, 2007, in a friendly against Turkey. He became Brazil's starting goalkeeper at the 2007 Copa América, replacing Elton. Doni played all six matches, keeping three clean sheets and saving two penalties in the semifinal shootout against Uruguay. Brazil triumphed 3-0 over Argentina in the final, with Doni being a key contributor to the team's success.
