Donna de Varona: Pioneer Swimmer and Media Icon

Donna de Varona, an American former swimmer, television personality, and social activist, was born in San Diego, California.

Early Swimming Success

De Varona made history as the youngest female swimmer to participate in the 1960 Summer Olympics. She achieved Olympic gold in 1964, winning in both the 400-meter individual medley and 4x100-meter freestyle events. Her exceptional career saw her set 18 records.

Transition to Television

After retiring from competitive swimming, de Varona pursued a path in sports journalism. In 1965, she became one of the first female sports commentators in television history when she joined ABC. She covered the 1984 Winter and Summer Olympics, including the Los Angeles Olympics alongside Jim Lampley.

Education and Advocacy

Despite her Olympic success, de Varona was denied a college athletic scholarship due to the lack of such opportunities for women at the time. Undeterred, she earned a degree from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1986. She also played a significant role in advocating for the implementation of Title IX, which mandated equal opportunities for women in education, including athletics.

Leadership and Legacy

De Varona served as president of the Women's Sports Foundation from 1976 to 1984. She continued to commentate on the 1988 Olympics and her television career extended beyond sports, covering a wide range of topics. Her younger sister, Joanna Kerns, achieved fame as an actress and director, notably for her role in the sitcom "Growing Pains."

Donna de Varona's pioneering spirit and contributions to sports, media, and education have left an enduring legacy. She remains an inspiration for women and athletes alike, proving that barriers can be overcome with determination and passion.
