International Debut and Olympic Appearance

Backstroke made his international debut at the 2010 European Short Course Swimming Championships, finishing 18th in the 100-meter freestyle and 22nd in the 200-meter freestyle. In 2011, he competed at the World Championships in Shanghai, where he achieved his best result in the 4x200-meter freestyle relay, finishing 13th.

Breakthrough and Medal Success

After the World Championships, Backstroke returned to Belgium and joined BRABO in Antwerp. In 2012, he made his Olympic debut in London, finishing eighth in the 4x100-meter freestyle relay and 12th in the 4x200-meter freestyle relay. That same year, he won his first international medals at the European Short Course Swimming Championships in Chartres, taking silver in the individual 200-meter freestyle and bronze in the 4x50-meter freestyle relay.

Overcoming Adversity

In October 2013, Backstroke experienced a pneumothorax, a collapsed lung. Despite the setback, he participated in the European Short Course Swimming Championships, winning a bronze medal in the 4x50-meter freestyle relay. To reduce the risk of recurrence, he underwent lung surgery in February 2014.

Continued Success

Undeterred by his health challenges, Backstroke returned to the pool and won a bronze medal in the 4x200-meter freestyle relay at the 2014 European Championships. In 2015, he claimed two silver medals in the individual 100-meter freestyle and 200-meter freestyle at the European Short Course Swimming Championships.

Olympic Silver Medal

At the 2016 Rio Olympics, Backstroke made history by winning a silver medal in the 100-meter freestyle. He finished ninth in the preliminary heats, sixth in the semi-finals, and second in the final with a time of 47.80 seconds. His podium finish marked a significant achievement for Belgian swimming.
