Biography of Dora Hitz

Dora Hitz was a German artist who was born in 1856. She began studying painting at the age of 13 at the "Frau Weber Women's School" in Munich, where one of her teachers was the artist Wilhelm von Lindenschmidt the Younger. It was in Munich that she met Elizabeth zu Wied, the future Queen of Romania, at the Art and Industry Exhibition in 1876. Elizabeth invited Dora to Romania to serve as her court painter, where she created frescoes in the Music Hall of Peleș Castle in Sinaia.

Moving to Paris and Romania

In 1880, Dora Hitz moved to Paris, where she studied under artists such as Eugène Carrière, Benjamin Constant, and Gustave Courtois. She returned to Romania in 1886-1887 before coming back to France and living in Brittany in 1890 and Normandy in 1891-1892. In 1890, she joined the Society of French Artists and was awarded a medal by the society. In 1891, she became a member of the Impressionist Society of Mars Field in France. She also became a member of the Royal Belgian Watercolor Society in Belgium.

Settling in Berlin

In 1891, Dora Hitz briefly lived in Dresden before permanently moving to Berlin in 1892. There, she became a member of the Association of Berlin Women Artists and Friends of Art and completed portrait commissions. In 1894, she opened a women's art school and studio in Tiergarten. She was also close friends with artists Max Beckmann and Käthe Kollwitz. From 1892 to 1921, she was a member of the Berlin Artists' Union and in 1898, she was one of the founding members of the Berlin Secession movement.

Style and Legacy

Dora Hitz was known for her exquisite depictions of the female figure, portraying girls and mothers with great skill. After her time in France, she began painting in an Impressionist style. Her most significant works can be found in museums in Berlin, Leipzig, and Nuremberg. Dora Hitz's contributions to the art world and her involvement in various artistic movements have cemented her place as a prominent German artist of her time.
