Early Life and CareerLubomir Kavalek is a prominent American chess grandmaster, born in Czechoslovakia in 1943. He began playing chess at an early age and quickly established himself as an exceptional talent.
Czechoslovakian Successes
Kavalek became Czechoslovakian champion twice, in 1962 and 1968. He was a member of the Czechoslovakian Olympic team and participated in several Chess Olympiads. His victories in international tournaments during this period included Varna (1965 and 1967), Leipzig (1965), and Bucarest (1966).
Career in the United States
In 1968, Kavalek emigrated to the United States, where he became a prominent figure in the chess community. He won the US Championship twice, in 1973 (shared with John Grefe) and 1978. He also represented the US team at several Chess Olympiads.
International Tournaments
Kavalek participated in a number of international tournaments throughout his career. He achieved top results in Varna, Amsterdam, and Zvolen, among others. In 1978, he faced off against Ulf Andersson in a match, defeating him with a score of 6.5:3.5.
