Biography of Douglas Harriman Kennedy
Douglas Harriman Kennedy, an American journalist, was born on March 24, 1967, in Washington, D.C. He is the tenth child of Robert F. Kennedy and Ethel Skakel Kennedy. He was named after William Averell Harriman, a friend of the family who was an industrialist, diplomat, and former Governor of New York.
Early Life and Family
When his father was assassinated, Douglas was only one and a half years old. His younger sister, Rory Kennedy, was born six months after their father's death. Douglas married Molly Elizabeth Stark, the daughter of John Sherwood Stark and Sharon Ellen Wing, on August 22, 1998, in Nantucket, Massachusetts. They have four children: Riley Elizabeth (born in 1999), Mary McCauley (born in 2001), Rowen Francis (born in June 2004), and Daniel Boru (born in January 2012).
Journalistic Career
Kennedy attended the Georgetown Preparatory School and Brown University. He started his career as a journalist at 'The New York Post,' where he conducted investigative journalism and secured his first interview with the officer who arrested Timothy McVeigh, the organizer of the Oklahoma City bombing.
In August 1996, Kennedy joined Fox News Channel as a reporter and became the host of the program 'Douglas Kennedy's American Stories,' which aired every two weeks. During his time at Fox News Channel, he covered the presidential elections of 1996, 2000, and 2004, as well as events like Hurricane Katrina.
In 2006, while working as a correspondent on 'The Big Story' at Fox News Channel, Kennedy commented on the controversy surrounding the release of footage capturing the death of Australian naturalist Steve Irwin, the host of the popular documentary series 'Crocodile Hunter.' Kennedy mentioned that he and his siblings grew up constantly seeing programs about their own father's death, and in the case of Irwin, it would be an unnecessary display of poor taste, considering he left behind two children.
Controversy
On January 7, 2012, Kennedy faced accusations of physical assault and endangering a child's health following an altercation with two nurses at Northern Westchester Hospital in Mount Kisco, New York. This incident occurred two days after the birth of his son, Daniel Boru. Kennedy allegedly attempted to take the baby out of the maternity ward to get some fresh air, which went against hospital rules, and supposedly physically resisted the two nurses who tried to stop him.
Social workers from the New York Department of Children and Family Services investigated the case, but found no evidence of child abuse in the Kennedy household. The accusations were deemed unfounded in March 2012.
