Douglas Band: Early Life and Education

Douglas Band was born in Sarasota, Florida, to David and Myrna Band. He earned a Bachelor's degree in English and Ethics from the University of Florida, where he was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. After six years working in the White House, Band obtained an M.A. in Liberal Studies from Georgetown University's Graduate School and a J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center, attending both programs in the evenings while working full-time.

White House Service

Band began working in the White House in 1995 as an unpaid intern in the White House Counsel's Office. He spent four years in the White House Counsel's office, eventually becoming a Special Assistant to the President and then one of the youngest Deputy Assistants to ever serve a president. Band subsequently served as Assistant to the President, traveling to nearly 125 countries and over 2,000 cities.

Post-Presidential Career

After leaving the White House, Band served as a Counselor and senior advisor to former President Clinton until 2012. He became a "key architect of Clinton's post-presidential enterprise," the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI), and advised the William J. Clinton Foundation in its formative years. Band created and implemented CGI, which has raised $69 billion for 2,100 philanthropic projects worldwide, according to the Clinton Foundation. Clinton has credited Band with conceiving CGI: "The idea to do that was Doug's brainchild," and has stated that he is "very grateful for the role Doug played when we were first starting out."

Association with Jeffrey Epstein

In 2002, Band met Jeffrey Epstein when Clinton and Epstein traveled together. Band has stated that he disliked Epstein and urged Clinton to end his relationship with him, but that Clinton refused to do so. He has also said that Clinton visited Epstein's island, Little Saint James, in January 2003. Flight logs from Epstein's private jets show that Band flew on the plane 26 times, including two flights on June 14, 2003, with Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell but not Bill Clinton. Band lobbied the Obama administration for the appointment of then-Senator Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State. In 2011, Chelsea Clinton accused Band of a conflict of interest between his work for the Clinton Foundation and Teneo Consulting. According to Politico, the dispute eventually "erupted" into a "screaming match" between Doug Band and Chelsea Clinton. Band parted ways with the Clintons in 2012.

Other Affiliations and Activities

Band has served on the Coca-Cola International Advisory Board and Vote Vets' advisory board. He is on the Board of Trustees of Georgetown University and the Board of Directors of Boys & Girls Clubs of America. He is also a trustee of the Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum and on the board of the Football Club of New York. Band was a member of the United States Bid Committee's board of directors in its unsuccessful bid to host the FIFA World Cup in the United States in 2018 or 2022 through US Soccer. Since 2010, Band has taught a course on "The Intersection of Politics and Public Service" at New York University's Wagner Graduate School of Public Service as an adjunct professor.

Departure from Teneo

Band resigned from Teneo in December 2020.
Personal Life
