Early Life and Misfits Career (1964-1983)Doyle Wolfgang von Frankenstein, born Paul Doyle Caiafa on September 15, 1964, is renowned as the influential guitarist of the legendary horror punk band Misfits. The younger brother of Misfits bassist Jerry Only, Doyle initially served as the band's roadie before being taught guitar by vocalist Glenn Danzig and his sibling.
In October 1980, at just 16 years old, Doyle joined Misfits as its third guitarist, replacing Bobby Steele. Alongside Danzig and Only, he adopted the iconic "devilock" hairstyle and contributed to the band's raw, aggressive sound. Doyle's raw passion and unconventional playing style, dominated by power chords and downstrokes, became synonymous with the Misfits' horror-infused brand of punk.
Kryst the Conqueror and Misfits Reformation (1987-1995)
Following the dissolution of Misfits in 1983, Doyle formed the metal band Kryst the Conqueror with his brother and drummer The Murp. He then joined his sibling in reforming Misfits in 1995, replacing Danzig on vocals with Michael Graves. With Only as the band's frontman, they released two full-length albums.
Collaboration with Danzig and Gorgeous Frankenstein (2000-2012)
In 2005, Doyle moved to Las Vegas and founded his own project, Gorgeous Frankenstein. He also toured extensively with Danzig on his "Blackest of the Black" tour. In 2007, Gorgeous Frankenstein became the support act for Danzig on their first tour, featuring former Misfits drummer Dr. Chud.
From 2011 to 2012, Doyle and Danzig reconnected for a series of "Danzig Legacy" concerts, where they performed classic Misfits songs. Their collaboration culminated in headlining several international festivals and playing over 70 shows together.
Solo Career and Doyle (2013-Present)
In 2013, Doyle embarked on a solo project under his own name. The lineup included vocalist Alex Story, drummer Dr. Chud, and bassist "Left Hand" Graham. Their debut album, "Abominator," was released independently on Monsterman Records.
Doyle has continued to tour and release new music with his solo project. In 2016, he reunited with Glenn Danzig and Jerry Only as "The Original Misfits" for two performances at the Riot Fest festival.
Style and Equipment
Doyle's guitar playing is characterized by its simplicity and raw power. He acknowledges his limited technical abilities but believes that strong songwriting is more important than instrumental virtuosity.
In the early days, Doyle used an Ibanez Iceman guitar. However, he later designed and built his own custom Annihilator guitar, incorporating his mechanical know-how. These guitars feature a neck-through design, graphite body, Seymour Duncan Invader pickups, and Dean Markley strings.
Doyle has collaborated with October Guitars to recreate the Annihilator, but he continues to use his original design. His pedalboard includes a TC Electronic Chorus/Flanger, MXR Micro Flanger, Digitech Whammy IV, Morley Bad Horsie 2 wah-wah pedal, Ampeg Scrambler, and Vox Time Machine delay.
Personal Life
Doyle was married to Stephanie Bellars from 2001 to 2013. They have a daughter, Boriss, born in 2002. Since 2013, he has been in a relationship with Alissa White-Gluz, vocalist of Arch Enemy. Together, they practice a vegan lifestyle.
