Dr. Sima Samar: A Trailblazing Advocate for Afghan Women's Rights
Early Life and EducationDr. Sima Samar was born in Afghanistan on February 4, 1957. Her childhood sparked an interest in medicine, and she pursued her passion at Kabul University. In February 1982, Samar became a prominent figure in the nation by graduating as a medical doctor, a rare achievement at the time.
Medical Practice and Flight
After completing her medical degree, Samar began her career as a young practitioner at a state-run hospital in Kabul. She quickly gained experience in various medical fields throughout central Afghanistan. However, political unrest forced her to flee with her son to Pakistan, seeking refuge at Mission Hospital.
Founding Shuhada Organization
Concerned about the lack of medical care for Afghan refugees, Samar established the Shuhada Organization in Quetta, Pakistan, in 1989. The organization trained young women and girls in medical skills, equipping them to provide much-needed assistance. Shuhada's branches soon expanded throughout Afghanistan.
Government Service and Resignation
Ten years after her departure from Afghanistan, Samar returned to her homeland in 2002 as President Karzai's Special Representative. She was later appointed as Minister of Women's Affairs. However, she resigned in protest against Islamic laws that threatened her with execution for violating religious codes.
Leadership of Human Rights Commission
Despite the challenges and threats she faced, Samar's unwavering spirit led her to assume the role of Chairperson of the Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission. She remains a vocal advocate for Afghan women's rights, condemning their continued suffering from diseases, hunger, and restrictive clothing.
