Greta Johnson: A Young Entrepreneur in the Worm Business

Twelve-year-old American schoolgirl Greta Johnson stands out among her fellow young entrepreneurs. While others may earn money from metal structures, software products, or even diamonds, Greta's business is quite unique. She trades in ordinary earthworms. Although there have been similar businesses before Greta, her parents were the ones who inspired her. In a book about 'How to make a lot of money without much effort,' Sue and Dale Johnson read about worm farms and entrusted their daughter with bringing the idea to life.

A Challenging Business Venture

The young entrepreneur quickly realized that worm farming was not as effortless as it seemed. It was not just about the product's uniqueness. Greta now collaborates with three fishing equipment stores, so selling the worms is not a problem. However, creating a marketable product proved to be quite difficult. Some might be surprised, thinking that worms are simple creatures without any thoughts. Some might assume that you can simply cut them in half, and they will grow back from each piece. However, cultivating worms is not any easier than raising chickens or cows.

The Challenges of Worm Farming

In a single plastic container filled with soil and compost, which Greta has managed to fill her parents' entire basement with, she can house around 2,000 worms. While these creatures may not possess intelligence, they do have one instinct given to them by Mother Nature – an insatiable hunger. If they are not properly fed, the result is a box of 2,000 dead worms in your basement. Worms are not particularly picky eaters; they will consume anything from grass and chicken feed to food scraps and torn newspapers. Unfortunately, torn newspapers are not as readily available these days.

Entrepreneurial Determination

Managing the feeding process is just one of the many challenges Greta takes on herself. Her parents help her, and they receive a quarter of her total income as their salary. While Greta cannot boast of substantial profits just yet, earning $90 a week is one of her records. Nevertheless, her business is steadily growing, and she hopes to attract more customers in the future. She sets aside part of her earnings for college tuition, as she plans to become a chef. Hopefully, her future profession will have nothing to do with worms.

The Value of Experience and Enjoyment

Although her business does not generate a significant income at the moment, Greta finds two things invaluable. Firstly, she gains priceless experience in running her own business, which will undoubtedly benefit her in the future. Secondly, she takes great pleasure in working with her little creatures. While her culinary skills are yet to be evaluated, Greta has demonstrated an extraordinary passion for earthworms. Not only does she fearlessly handle them, but she also possesses extensive knowledge about their behavior. How many twelve-year-old girls in the country know that worms dislike onions and chocolate but enjoy coffee grounds? How many know how long it takes for a worm to grow from a larva to a robust 7-centimeter product? Greta Johnson not only overcomes her fear of worms but approaches their cultivation with dedication. Perhaps this is the key to her success.
