Biography of Dudley Allen Buck
Dudley Allen Buck was an American electrical engineer and inventor. He is best known for his invention of the cryotron, a superconducting switching device that operates in liquid helium at temperatures close to absolute zero. Among his other inventions are the ferroelectric random access memory (FeRAM), associative memory devices, and the non-destructive reading of magnetic fields. Buck also played a role in the development of electron-beam processed printed circuits.

Early Life and Education
Dudley A. Buck was born on April 25, 1927, in San Francisco, California. In 1940, he moved to Santa Barbara, where he obtained the necessary documents to open an amateur radio station, W6WCK, and a first-class radio telephone operator license for commercial purposes. While working at a local radio station, KTMS, Buck attended college.
After graduating from the University of Washington, Buck served in the United States Navy for two years. He was stationed in Washington, D.C. Following his service, Buck began his career at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1950. He started as a junior research staff member and eventually earned his doctorate in 1958.
Inventions and Contributions
Buck built his first FeRAM module, a module with a ferroelectric medium, in 1952 as part of his diploma work. Besides its primary use in computer memory, ferroelectric materials can also be utilized for shift registers and amplifiers. Buck outlined the main idea behind the cryotron in December 1953. By 1955, he successfully constructed a cryotron device using niobium and tantalum. The cryotron was a significant breakthrough in the size of computer electronic components. In the following decade, cryotron research in other laboratories led to the invention of the Crowe Cell, Josephson Junction, and SQUID magnetometers. These inventions made it possible to record brain electrical activity using magnetoencephalography technology.
Another key invention by Buck was the method of reading magnetic materials without damaging the information. Traditional magnetic core memory devices would erase the memory content during the reading process, requiring additional time for rewriting the data back into the magnetic storage. However, Buck's technique of "cross-field reading" allowed the magnetic state of the core to remain unchanged during reading, eliminating the need for rewriting.
Buck also invented associative memory devices for computers. His method enabled the storage and retrieval of data without the need to specify the location of the data. Associative memory allows for searching information based on an associative tag recorded in each memory cell. In December 1958, at the request of Dr. Louis Ridenour, an advisor to President Dwight D. Eisenhower, Solomon Kullback appointed Buck to the Scientific Advisory Board on Electronics and Data Processing at the National Security Agency.
Legacy and Tragic Death
Dudley Buck tragically passed away on April 25, 1959, on his 32nd birthday. His closest collaborator, Louis Ridenour, also passed away on the same day. Despite his untimely death, Dudley Allen Buck's groundbreaking inventions and contributions to the field of electrical engineering continue to shape the world of technology and innovation.
