Princess Dulce of Barcelona

Dulce was born to Ramon Berenguer IV, Count of Barcelona, and Petronilla, Queen of Aragon. She had two brothers, King Alfonso II of Aragon and Ramon Berenguer III, Count of Provence.

Marriage and Queen Consort

In 1175, Dulce married Infante Sancho of Portugal. This marriage was a strategic alliance between Portugal and Aragon against the Moors, Castile, and Leon. Upon Sancho's accession to the Portuguese throne in 1185, Dulce became Queen Consort. It is believed that she held some lands in Portugal as her own.

Children

Dulce and Sancho had ten children:

Teresa (1178-1250): Queen of Leon, wife of Alfonso IX, beatified by the Catholic Church.

Sancha (1180-1229): Abbess, beatified by the Catholic Church.

Raimundo (c. 1180-1189): Died in infancy.

Berengaria (1194-1221): Queen of Denmark, wife of Valdemar II.

Mafalda (1195-1257): Queen of Castile, wife of Henrique I, beatified by the Catholic Church.
