Dimitrie Cantacuzino
Early Life and Accession to PowerDimitrie Cantacuzino was a Greek nobleman who first ascended to the throne of the Moldavian Principality in November 1673. He gained this position after the previous ruler, Stefan Petriceicu, was forced to seek refuge in Poland. Cantacuzino relied heavily on Tatar support, which led to widespread looting in Moldavia.
First Reign
Cantacuzino's first reign was characterized by increased Tatar raids and the outbreak of a devastating famine. In 10 November 1675, Stefan Petriceicu returned from Poland and regained the throne.
Second Reign
In February 1684, following Petriceicu's defeat and retreat to Poland, Cantacuzino was restored as ruler. However, his second reign was marred by similar hardships as his first. Tatar raids continued, causing widespread hunger and even cannibalism. A plague epidemic also broke out during this period.
Overthrow and Legacy
Finally, in June 1685, Cantacuzino was overthrown and replaced by Constantine Cantemir. His legacy is one of a tumultuous and difficult time for the Moldavian Principality, marked by foreign invasion, hunger, and disease.
