Early Life and Education
Alexander Khloponin was born on January 27, 1940, in the village of Nartan in the Kabardino-Balkarian ASSR. He graduated from the North Caucasus Mining and Metallurgy Institute in Vladikavkaz in 1961 with a degree in Metallurgy.
Career at Norilsk Mining and Metallurgical Combine
From 1961 to 1986, Khloponin worked at the Norilsk Mining and Metallurgical Combine, rising through the ranks from copper smelter to director of the Nadezhdinsky Metallurgical Plant.
Leadership at Balkhash and Severonickel
From 1986 to 1991, Khloponin served as director of the Balkhash Mining and Metallurgical Combine in Kazakhstan. In early 1996, he became general director of Severonickel JSC, a subsidiary of RAO Norilsk Nickel. He also served as a member of the board of RAO Norilsk Nickel.
Rise to CEO at Norilsk Nickel
In July 1996, Khloponin was appointed first deputy general director of RAO Norilsk Nickel. In March 1997, he rose to general director of RAO Norilsk Nickel (formerly known as Norilsk Mining and Metallurgical Combine).
Positions of Influence
From June 1997, Khloponin became a member of the board of directors of RAO Norilsk Nickel. In October 1997, he joined the board of directors of Norilskgazprom JSC.
Political Engagement
In December 1997, Khloponin was elected as a deputy to the Legislative Assembly of the Krasnoyarsk Territory. In October 1999, he stepped down as general director of Norilsk Nickel to become general director of Norilsk Mining Company JSC.
Later Career and Accolades
From January 2000, Khloponin served as first deputy general director of RAO Norilsk Nickel. He has received the title of Hero of Socialist Labor and holds various state awards.
