Pierre S. du Pont: American Industrialist and Business Leader
Early Life and EducationPierre Samuel du Pont was born on January 15, 1870, in Wilmington, Delaware, into the prominent du Pont family of industrialists. As the future heir to the DuPont chemical empire, he pursued a degree in chemistry at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Career in Chemistry
In 1892, du Pont and his cousin Francis Gurney du Pont invented smokeless gunpowder at the Carney's Point plant in New Jersey. However, his destiny lay in the management of the vast DuPont corporation.
Leadership at DuPont
Du Pont played various roles at DuPont before assuming the presidency in 1914. His tenure was marked by the implementation of modern accounting and management practices, as well as the expansion into new markets. During World War I, the company's assets soared thanks to du Pont's proposal for advance payments on war materiel.
Conflict and Resignation
In 1915, du Pont bought out Thomas Coleman's shares in DuPont, angering his cousin Alfred Irenée du Pont. Legal battles ensued, permanently straining their relationship. Du Pont resigned as president in 1919.
Contribution to Automotive Industry
After leaving DuPont, du Pont led General Motors to become a global giant. His tenure was cut short in 1923 due to disagreements with Alfred Sloan, a fellow GM shareholder.
Later Career and Legacy
Du Pont remained on DuPont's board of directors until 1940 and later dedicated himself to philanthropy and personal pursuits. He served on the Delaware State Board of Education and founded the renowned Longwood Gardens. Despite marrying his cousin Alice Belin in 1915, he remained childless.
