Early Life and Education
Ernie Lee "Ernie" Hudson was born in December 1945 in Berrien County, Michigan. The son of an absent father and a mother who died of tuberculosis when he was an infant, he was raised by his grandmother, Arrana Donald. After graduating from high school, Hudson joined the United States Marine Corps but was discharged due to asthma. He then pursued a career in acting, joining the Concept East theater company in Detroit and studying acting at Wayne State University and the University of Minnesota. He later attended Yale School of Drama in an attempt to earn an MFA degree.
Film and Television Career
Hudson made his film debut in the late 1970s, appearing in minor roles in films such as "The Human Tornado" and "The Incredible Hulk". In 1981, he gained recognition for his role as Qui Nin in the martial arts film "The Octagon". He subsequently appeared in the television series "The Dukes of Hazzard" and "Webster", and the Canadian films "Spacehunter: Adventures in the Forbidden Zone" and "The Warriors".
Hudson's breakout role came in 1984 when he was cast as Winston Zeddemore in the comedy-fantasy film "Ghostbusters". The film became a box office success and made Hudson a household name. He reprised his role in the 1989 sequel, "Ghostbusters II".
Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, Hudson continued to expand his filmography, appearing in horror films ("Tales from the Crypt", "The Crow"), comedies ("Mr. Magoo"), and dramas ("Congo", "The Basketball Diaries"). He also gained critical acclaim for his role as Kareem Said in the HBO prison drama series "Oz".
As Hudson entered his senior years, he remained an in-demand actor, appearing in films such as "Miss Congeniality", "The Watcher", and "The Ron Clark Story". Personal Life
Hudson has been married twice. His first wife, Jenny Moore, gave birth to his sons Ernie Jr. and Rahman. His second wife, Linda Kingsberg, is the mother of his sons Ross and Andrew.
Recent Projects
In 2021, Hudson appeared in episodes of the television series "MacGyver" and the film "Day of Redemption". He also voiced Santa Claus in the animated film "Bibo Saves Christmas".
