Eberhart, Duke of Bavaria
Eberhart was a member of the Luitpold dynasty and served as Duke of Bavaria from 937 to 938. He was the eldest son of Duke Arnulf the Evil.
The Crown of Italy and Aftermath
In 933 or 934, Eberhart was offered the crown of Italy following the death of King Rudolph II. However, his campaign to secure the kingdom failed. Upon the death of his father in 937, Eberhart inherited the Duchy of Bavaria.
Conflict with Otto I
Taking advantage of Arnulf's death, German King Otto I sought to reassert German authority over Bavaria, which had been largely diminished under Arnulf. In 938, Otto invaded Eberhart's territory. Eberhart was defeated in battle and deposed from his position as duke.
Successor and Fate
In Eberhart's place, Otto appointed his uncle, Berthold, who had previously ruled Carinthia, as the new Duke of Bavaria. Eberhart's fate following his deposition remains uncertain. He may have died around 940 or possibly emigrated to Hungary, continuing his father's policy of maintaining peace with the Magyars.
