Ed Buckle: The Power of Music in Rehabilitation
Ed Buckle, a 22-year-old British student at Leeds University, faced a life-altering accident in 2012. After being hit by a speeding taxi, Buckle was left with severe injuries and his parents were informed that his chances of recovery were slim. He lost his memory, ability to speak, and walk, but his love for music, specifically the song of the rock band Coldplay, unexpectedly played a crucial role in unlocking his brain.
A Tragic Accident and a Miraculous Recovery
Returning home from a party, Ed Buckle was struck by a taxi traveling at high speed. The impact left him in a coma, and doctors gave his parents grim forecasts about his prognosis. Buckle spent six months in a coma due to the serious brain injuries he sustained. However, against all odds, he eventually regained consciousness, much to the delight of his family. Unfortunately, Buckle not only lost his ability to speak and walk, but also experienced amnesia. He later revealed that during that period, he existed in a fog and understood very little. But at some point, the chords of a Coldplay song emerged in his mind. It was truly astonishing because Buckle couldn't even remember his own name, yet he could recall his favorite composition. He approached the piano in his wheelchair and started picking out the chords. Over time, Buckle remembered other Coldplay songs. Simultaneously, he made efforts to learn to walk, but music played a significant role in his recovery. Buckle expressed that he could feel his brain unlocking as his fingers touched the keys, allowing him to concentrate.
The Role of Music in Rehabilitation
To assist Buckle, a music therapist was assigned to him. The therapist, an accomplished violinist and music educator, guided Buckle in gradually singing along and restoring his speech. When Buckle listened to his favorite melodies, they triggered memories associated with them, enabling him to recall moments from his life involving his loved ones. Additionally, the music therapist incorporated a drum into the innovative therapy to help Buckle reconnect with the natural rhythm of walking. After the accident, Buckle struggled to perform even the simplest actions, and the therapist's approach provided a valuable tool for him to rediscover the concept of walking rhythmically.
A Touching Encounter with Coldplay
News of Ed Buckle's story reached the members of Coldplay, and their frontman, Christopher Martin, and guitarist, Jonathan Buckland, invited him to the annual British music award ceremony, the 'Silver Clef Awards.' Martin admitted that Buckle's story moved him to tears, and meeting him was both astonishing and touching.
