Teenage Tragedy
At the tender age of 16, Kechi suffered severe burns covering 65% of her body when Sosoliso Airlines Flight 1145 crashed in Nigeria. Among the 109 passengers, only seven were found alive, with Kechi and one other being the sole survivors.
Challenges and Surgeries
To regain her speech, mobility, eyesight, and independence, Kechi has undergone numerous extensive surgeries. Her journey has been marked by physical and emotional pain, including a partially paralyzed eyelid, an absent earlobe, and limited mobility in her arms and neck.
Music and Inspiration
Music has been a solace for Kechi. After the crash, her mother sang to her in her coma. Post-recovery, she sang in her college choir and graduated with a degree in Economics. She has delivered powerful speeches, including one at a TED conference in London, inspiring others with her story of resilience.
'America's Got Talent' Fame
Kechi's appearance on 'America's Got Talent' in 2017 captivated audiences with her rendition of Ed Sheeran's 'Thinking Out Loud.' Her powerful performance earned her a spot in the finale, where she sang Estelle's 'Conqueror,' leaving judges in awe.
Expert Medical Care
Following her stint on the show, Kechi received life-changing medical assistance from renowned surgeons. Dr. Andrew Frankel and Dr. Demetre Arnaoutkis restored functionality to her face and neck, allowing her to close her eyes and move her neck with greater ease. Dr. Peter Grossman is currently working on improving the mobility of her hands.
'America's Got Talent: The Champions'
Simon Cowell invited Kechi to perform in 'America's Got Talent: The Champions,' which premiered in 2019. She expressed gratitude for Cowell's support in her journey towards fame and acknowledged that her life has taken a remarkable turn since the plane crash.
