Early Life

Edward Droste was born in Massachusetts to Diana (née Forbes) and Bruce F. Droste. His maternal grandfather was the conductor and musicologist Elliot Forbes. Through his maternal line, he is related to singer China Forbes.

Droste attended Shady Hill School in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where his mother was a music teacher, and Concord Academy in Concord, Massachusetts. He attended high school with Refinery29 founder Philippe von Borries.

He enrolled in Hampshire College for one year in 1999 before transferring to the Gallatin School of Individualized Study at New York University, graduating in 2003.

Career

Grizzly Bear

Droste began writing and performing songs solo under the moniker Grizzly Bear, releasing the album "Horn of Plenty" in 2004 with drummer Christopher Bear. Chris Taylor and, eventually, Daniel Rossen joined them to form the current four-piece band.

Droste has said about the band's genesis: "Daniel [Rossen] and I are the primary songwriters, but we also happen to be the least capable performers, personality-wise. I respect performers who have got the shtick, the look, the thing. That's all well and dandy, but with our songs it would come off like the biggest farce. It took us a long time to become comfortable; this whole thing was four people growing into ourselves."

In a 2020 episode of Lunch Therapy, Droste announced that he had left Grizzly Bear to pursue therapy.
