Childhood and Youth

Eddie Izzard was born on February 7, 1962, in Aden, a city in the southern tip of the Arabian Peninsula (now part of Yemen). His father worked for British Petroleum, and his mother was a nurse. His mother passed away from cancer when he was six years old. He has an older brother named Mark. Due to the war for independence in Aden, the Izzard family had to leave the Middle East. They moved to Bangor, a resort town in Northern Ireland. Eddie was passionate about football during his childhood, and there are videos of him playing with his brother. However, the ongoing ethno-political conflict in Ulster forced the family to move again, this time to Wales. Despite the challenges, Eddie has fond memories of his childhood in Northern Ireland, and he has shared photos from that period on social media. He spent his free time playing with both Catholic and Protestant children. After his mother's death, Eddie attended St. John's School in Newton, where he discovered his passion for acting and shared it with his brother. However, his brother did not appreciate his talent and criticized him.

Early Career

Eddie Izzard began pursuing his creative interests while he was in school. However, he faced rejection from a theater group due to their low opinion of his acting abilities. His attempt to become a musician playing the clarinet also ended in failure. He went on to study drama at the University of Sheffield. During his youth, he became close friends with Rob Ballard, and they both dreamed of becoming famous comedians. They performed on the streets of London, taking inspiration from the comedy group "Monty Python." Over time, Eddie developed his unique style as a stand-up comedian, known for his absurd humor, frequent use of filler words, audience interaction, and rapid topic changes. In 1987, Izzard made his appearance at the iconic London club, Comedy Store. His popularity grew, and he soon appeared on television, captivating audiences with his extravagant delivery. On stage, he often experimented with his material, coming up with jokes on the spot. Izzard parodied the voices of famous actors and used physicality to create artistic characters. He was not afraid to tackle controversial subjects, which drew criticism for his use of Jesus Christ's name and biblical themes in his stand-up comedy show, "Glorious."

Creative Work and Personal Life

Starting from 1994, Izzard performed at the London Comedy Theatre and frequently appeared in historical plays. He also pursued a career in film, starring in "Ocean's Thirteen," where he portrayed the charismatic pirate, John Silver, in the film adaptation of "Treasure Island," and in the television series "Hannibal," where he played the psychopathic surgeon, Abel Gideon. Izzard also lent his voice to various projects, including "The Simpsons," "The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian," and the TV series "Green Eggs and Ham." In the comedy animated film, "The Lego Batman Movie," Izzard voiced the character of Voldemort from the Harry Potter novels. In 2013, he received the Cultural Humanism Award from Harvard University for his contributions to the arts.

Eddie Izzard's personal life has been intertwined with his comedy. He first questioned his gender identity at the age of four when he saw a boy dressed in women's clothing as a joke at St. John's School. Over time, he identified as a "male tomboy," but faced challenges when he started wearing skirts, including being rejected from a football team. Through his comedic performances, Izzard openly discussed being a transvestite, incorporating many aspects of his personal life into his routines. In 1992, he revealed that his love for makeup and dressing in women's clothing was not just a part of his stage persona. Finally, in 2020, Izzard fully transitioned and asked to be referred to as a woman named Susie. She identifies as genderfluid and chooses to embrace her feminine side. Susie's decision was met with support on social media, and organizations like the Human Rights Campaign praised her courage. Prior to her transition, Izzard had to keep the names of her partners private due to fear of negative public reactions.

Current Work and Activism

In 2023, Susie Izzard added to her filmography by playing the lead role of a prisoner in a modern adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson's novel, "Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde." She also plans to portray the famous detective Sherlock Holmes in the project "Sherlock's Daughter."

Susie is also actively involved in politics and is a member of the Labour Party. She advocates against the monarchy in the United Kingdom. In August 2023, Izzard announced her candidacy in the Brighton Pavilion constituency elections. She positions herself as a global citizen and respects other cultures. Susie has displayed a talent for learning foreign languages and has performed her comedy routines in Arabic, French, Russian, and German. As a stand-up comedian, she supports European integration.

Outside of her career, Susie Izzard is an avid football fan and regularly attends Crystal Palace matches. She also has a passion for model railroading. Additionally, she is involved in charity work and has participated in events to raise awareness for social causes. Despite having no prior experience in long-distance running, Izzard has completed marathons to draw public attention to important issues.
