Eddie Gaven: A Young Star Rises in American Soccer

Early Life and Career

Eddie Gaven was born in Hamilton, New Jersey, and began his soccer career with the Steinert High School team. At the age of 16, he became one of the youngest players to sign a professional contract in the American soccer league. After completing his academy training, Gaven joined the 2003 MLS Draft, where he was selected by the MetroStars.

MetroStars and Youngest in MLS History

Gaven made his debut for the MetroStars in June 2003, becoming the youngest player in team history to take the field. He also became the youngest player to score a goal for the team, achieving the feat in July 2003 against the Columbus Crew. During a match, Gaven became the youngest goalkeeper in MLS history when head coach Bob Bradley replaced starting goalkeeper Tim Howard with an outfield player.

International Success and MLS Accolades

Gaven represented the United States at the 2003 FIFA U-17 World Championship and became the youngest player in CONCACAF Olympic qualifying history. After becoming a regular starter for the MetroStars in 2004, he was named to the MLS All-Star Game and the 2004 MLS Best XI, making him the youngest player to receive both honors. In 2005, he continued his impressive form and played for the US youth team at the FIFA World Youth Championship in the Netherlands.

Columbus Crew and Personal Life

Prior to the 2006 season, Gaven was traded to the Columbus Crew. He played a significant role in the team's 2006 campaign, scoring four goals. In 2007, he appeared in 27 games for Columbus, scoring five goals.

Outside of soccer, Gaven won the 2004 La Manga Cup with the MetroStars and married Paula on January 18, 2008. They have two children, Ed and Janet. Gaven also has an older brother, Jim, and a younger sister, Megan.
