Early Life and Family Background

Edgar de Evia, a renowned Mexican-American photographer, was born in Mérida, Yucatán, Mexico, to wealthy landowner Domingo Fernando Evia y Barbachano and French pianist Pauline Joutard (Miirrha Alhambra). The Evia family held significant influence in Mexico, with de Evia's great-grandfather, Don Miguel Barbachano y Tarrazo, serving as governor of Yucatán five times.

Immigration and Education

On June 30, 1912, the two-year-old de Evia arrived with his family in New York City, where he graduated high school in 1931. According to immigration records, he changed his surname to "de Evia" after 1942, having previously used the pseudonym "Edgar D. Evia."

Beginnings in Photography

While assisting homeopathic physician Dr. Guy Beckley Stearns, de Evia developed a keen interest in photography, initially used for illustrating their medical publications. His talent for still-life photography soon earned him recognition in magazines such as "Popular Photography Color" and "Applied Photography."

Commercial Success and Artistic Influence

De Evia's versatile photography spanned various fields, including fashion, advertising, and food. He became a sought-after photographer for fashion designers and food manufacturers alike. His work inspired numerous contemporary photographers, including iconic fashion photographer Melvin Sokolsky, who admired de Evia's ability to blend artistic vision with commercial appeal.

The Rhinelander Mansion and Elite Clientele

De Evia often used the Rhinelander Mansion in New York City as a backdrop for his photographs. He leased a portion of the property from the 1950s to the 1960s, using it both as a residence and a rental space for offices and studios. De Evia's reputation attracted top models, such as Lisa Fonssagrives, Dovima, and Wilhelmina, who were selected for his shoots by his agent, David Chimay.

Business Ventures and Creative Direction

In 1968, de Evia established a photo catalog company, where he currently serves as creative director. The company supplies catalogs for various retail establishments.
