Introduction

The Edgecombe County serial killer, also known as the Rocky Mount serial killer, remains an unidentified individual responsible for the deaths of 10 missing Black women in North Carolina. Of these victims, eight bodies have been discovered, leading authorities to believe they are dealing with a serial killer.

Victims and Modus Operandi

The victims of the Edgecombe County serial killer were all Black women with ties to prostitution or drug use. The killer targeted these individuals and abducted them from the Rocky Mount area. The victims' bodies were later found in various locations around Edgecombe County and Halifax County.

Investigation and Timeline

2008: Formation of Task Force

In June 2008, the Edgecombe County Sheriff's Office requested assistance from the State Bureau of Investigation (SBI). A task force was established, comprising local, state, and federal officials, to connect the dots between the murders.

2010: Roberta Williams' Remains Identified

In 2010, the remains of Roberta Williams, who had been missing since 2008, were discovered between Battleboro and Whitakers along Seven Bridges Road. Her case was linked to the serial killings.

2011: Yolanda Lancaster's Remains Identified

In January 2011, human remains were found in Edgecombe County by a hunter. The remains were later identified as those of Yolanda Lancaster, a 37-year-old who had been reported missing.

2005-2009: Discovery of Victims' Bodies

Between 2005 and 2009, the bodies of several other victims were discovered in Edgecombe County. These included Melody Wiggins (2005), Jackie Thorpe (2007), Ernestine Battle (2008), and Jarniece Hargrove (2009).

Suspect and Charges

In September 2009, Antwan Maurice Pittman, a registered sex offender, was charged with murder in connection with the death of Taraha Shenice Nicholson (2006). Authorities suspected Pittman's involvement in multiple other murders as well.
