Biography of Dana Sue Gray

Dana Sue Gray is an American serial killer who murdered three elderly women in 1994. She was arrested after attempting her fourth murder, but the victim survived and identified her. Gray claimed that she committed the murders solely for financial gain.

Early Life

Dana was born to Beverly and Russell Armbrust. Beverly had multiple pregnancies, but Dana was her first child as she had previous miscarriages. Beverly was known for her aggression, vanity, and careless attitude towards the family's finances. Beverly and Russell divorced when Dana was two years old after Beverly got into a fight with an elderly woman. Dana had little contact with her father after the divorce, and she desperately sought her mother's attention through various means, often resorting to theft or fighting.

In school, Dana struggled to get along with other children and performed poorly academically. She was frequently suspended for forging absence notes. When Dana was 14, her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. This experience inspired Dana to become a nurse, as she was impressed by the care her mother received from clinic workers.

After her mother's death, Dana moved in with her father but eventually left home after her stepmother discovered drugs in her room.

Adult Life

Several years later, Dana began a relationship with a skydiving enthusiast. She became pregnant twice during their relationship, but each time, her partner convinced her to have an abortion. Around the same time, Dana enrolled in nursing courses and also became skilled in skydiving. In 1981, after completing her nursing training, Dana ended her relationship with the skydiver and started dating windsurfer Chris Dodson. Their relationship lasted for several years but did not lead to marriage.

In October 1987, Dana married William Gray, an acquaintance from her school days. Gray was initially infatuated with Dana, who had a fit and athletic physique. However, their marriage was plagued by financial issues due to Dana's inability to manage money. Dana even had a falling out with her stepbrothers during the division of her aunt's inheritance. She worked as a nurse at the Inland Valley Regional Medical Center and was involved in various business projects with her husband.

Dana divorced William Gray in 1993 and moved in with Jim Wilkins, a family friend and her secret lover. In the same year, she was fired from the hospital for mishandling narcotic painkillers. In February 1994, Dana attempted to reconcile with Gray, reaching out to his parents to arrange a meeting. Gray agreed, but he never showed up, which ultimately saved his life.

Serial Killings

On the day of the planned meeting with Gray, Dana murdered her first victim, 86-year-old Norma Davis. Later, Gray discovered that Dana had taken out a large life insurance policy on him and realized that her motive for the murders was financial gain. Dana targeted her victims for their credit cards, which she used to satisfy her shopping addiction.

The bank that issued one of the stolen credit cards became suspicious of the unusually large purchases and contacted the victim's family. With the information provided by store employees and the survivor, Dorinda Hawkins, Dana was tracked down and arrested. Despite denying any involvement in the stolen credit cards, Dana was sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.

Currently, Dana is serving her sentence at the California Women's Prison in Chowchilla.
