Biography of Edie Brickell

Edie Brickell is an American singer-songwriter. She was born and raised in Dallas. In 1985, while studying at university, she performed on stage for the first time with a local group called New Bohemians. Brickell soon joined the band and spent the following year writing songs for them as the lineup continuously changed. Eventually, the group settled with Brad Houser on bass guitar, Kenny Withrow on guitar, and drummer Matt Chamberlin. This lineup of New Bohemians went to Rockfield Studios and recorded their debut album, which was released by Geffen Records. The album, titled Shooting Rubberbands, was warmly received by critics and listeners, selling over a million copies. Brickell's unique musical vision and distinctive low voice captivated a wide audience. The album's biggest hit was the song "What I Am," which reached the top ten in the United States.

The band's second album, Ghost of a Dog, was a disappointment and did not achieve any success. Soon after, The New Bohemians disbanded, and Edie Brickell married renowned musician Paul Simon and had a child. After several years of creative silence, Brickell released her first solo album in the late summer of 1994. The album, titled Picture Perfect Morning, received positive reviews but did not regain her previous popularity. Brickell was content with the situation, tired of the media attention that had followed her during the height of her fame. She was happy to release a record without unnecessary hype and focus on raising her son.

Despite the urging of her label, Geffen, Brickell refused to record new songs for almost a decade. During this time, two compilations of her solo and group hits were released, including seven previously unreleased songs. Brickell resumed her solo career in 2003 with the release of the album Volcano on the Cherry/Universal label. The album showcased stylistic innovations, incorporating ethnic motifs alongside Brickell's newfound skills on acoustic guitar, which she had developed during her years of silence. She supported the album's release with appearances on several television shows and a small tour.

In 2006, Brickell collaborated with several original members of New Bohemians to record a new album, Stranger Things. This marked the band's first album in 16 years.
