Early Life and Club Career
Edimilson Fernandes was born into a family of Portuguese and Cape Verdean descent. His cousin is Swiss footballer Gelson Fernandes. Edimilson began his football journey in 2004 with FC Fully before joining FC Sion's youth academy in 2007. In the 2012/13 season, he moved to the club's reserve team, FC Sion II, in the First League Promotion, where he played 41 matches and scored 8 goals.
Fernandes made his Swiss Super League debut on June 1, 2013, against FC Zurich and became a regular starter for FC Sion in the 2014/15 season. He netted his first goal for the first team against FC Luzern on March 1, 2015. On June 7, 2015, he helped FC Sion win the Swiss Cup by defeating Basel 3-0, earning them a spot in the Europa League.
In the Europa League, Fernandes made his debut against Rubin Kazan on September 17, 2015, where he registered two assists. On August 25, 2016, he transferred to English club West Ham United for a fee of €6.40 million, signing a four-year contract.
International Career
Fernandes debuted for the Switzerland U21 national team on March 26, 2016, against England.
