Early Career and Breakthrough with BATE Borisov
Vitali Kutuzov, a Belorussian attacking midfielder, began his professional career at BATE Borisov. During his time with the club, he made 99 appearances and scored 55 goals, showcasing his impressive striking abilities. His performances in European competitions, particularly in a memorable match against FC Barcelona, caught the attention of top European clubs.
Controversy at AC Milan and Loan Spells
In the 2001/02 season, Kutuzov made a high-profile move to AC Milan. However, his time at the Italian giants was marred by limited playing opportunities, as he only made two substitute appearances that season. Facing intense competition from the likes of Andriy Shevchenko, Filippo Inzaghi, and Javi Moreno, Kutuzov failed to establish himself in Milan's starting lineup.
Subsequently, he was loaned out to Sporting CP in Lisbon and later to Serie B side Avellino. While his spell at Sporting was underwhelming, he revived his career at Avellino, becoming the club's top scorer with 15 goals in 43 matches. He credits coach Zdenek Zeman for his resurgence.
Resurgence with Sampdoria
After failing to secure a regular spot at Milan, Kutuzov signed a three-year contract with Sampdoria in 2004. Despite playing primarily as a left midfielder under coach Novellino, he managed to prove his worth in Serie A. Sampdoria had a surprisingly successful season, finishing fourth and qualifying for European competitions.
In the 2005/06 season, Kutuzov increased his playing time and contributed three goals in 16 matches. He suffered an injury that sidelined him for a few games, leading to interest from Serie B leaders Torino FC. However, Sampdoria resisted their advances.
Career Decline and Transfers
Kutuzov's move to Parma in the 2006/07 season was unexpected. He initially played regularly, including in UEFA Cup matches. However, the club's fortunes declined, resulting in a change of coach to Claudio Ranieri. Ranieri did not consider Kutuzov as a regular starter but managed to keep Parma in Serie A.
In the following season, Kutuzov was linked with moves to Serie B side Cesena and Serie A club Livorno. Instead, he joined Pisa, a Serie B newcomer, on loan with an option to purchase. This move marked a return to the second division, which many hoped would reignite his career.
Controversies and Public Criticism
Kutuzov's career has been punctuated by controversy, including an incident involving a national team call-up. He was expelled from the squad due to poor physical condition and returned to Parma late without explanation. This situation drew comparisons to a similar incident involving Belarusian forward Maksim Kalachev (Karyaka).
Additionally, Kutuzov has faced criticism from some quarters within Belarus, who question his commitment to the national team and his perceived arrogance. These negative opinions reflect a common problem in Belarusian football, where top players are often criticized instead of being celebrated.
