Background and Early LifeEdmen Shahbazyan, an Armenian-American mixed martial artist, hails from Glendale, California. His Armenian heritage is deeply rooted in his community, and his parents emigrated from Yerevan, Armenia. From a young age, Shahbazyan's interest in martial arts sparked, and he began training at the Glendale Fighting Club at the age of 12. Notably, he served as a sparring partner for Ronda Rousey during his teenage years.
Early Career in MMA
Shahbazyan made his professional MMA debut in 2017 at CXF 6, where he secured a first-round TKO victory over Sela Williams. He continued his impressive streak in California promotions, amassing a record of 6-0 with all wins coming via first-round knockout. His exceptional performance earned him an invitation to the fifth episode of "Dana White's Tuesday Night Contender Series" season 2. There, he faced Antonio Jones and emerged victorious with a TKO in just 40 seconds of the first round. This remarkable performance paved the way for his UFC contract.
UFC Career
Shahbazyan's UFC debut came on November 30, 2018, in the finale of The Ultimate Fighter 28 against Darren Stewart. He triumphed in a split decision. His next outing was against Charles Byrd at UFC 235, which he won via first-round knockout. Subsequently, Shahbazyan faced Jack Marshman at UFC 239, where he secured a first-round rear-naked choke victory.
In a scheduled bout against Krzysztof Jotko at UFC 244, Jotko withdrew due to injury and was replaced by Brad Tavares. Shahbazyan prevailed with a first-round knockout via head kick. However, his undefeated streak came to an end on August 1, 2020, when he suffered a third-round TKO loss to Derek Brunson in the main event of UFC Fight Night 173: Brunson vs. Shahbazyan.
