Biography of Edna Oliver
Edna May Nutter, known professionally as Edna Oliver, was an American actress and Oscar nominee. She was born in the small town of Malden, Massachusetts, to Ida May and Charles Edward Nutter. She was a descendant of the 6th President of the United States, John Quincy Adams.
Early Career
At the age of 14, Edna left school and pursued an acting career. She achieved her first success in 1917 on Broadway in the musical comedy "Oh, Boy!" In 1923, she made her film debut. One of her most notable roles on Broadway was as Party Hawks, the wife of Captain Andy Hawks, in the famous 1927 musical "Show Boat." She returned to the stage with this role in 1932 but had to decline the film adaptation of the musical in 1936 because she was playing the role of Nurse in the film "Romeo and Juliet."
Later Years and Death
Edna passed away on her birthday in 1942 at the age of 59 due to intestinal illness.
