Born in Carpaneto, Emilia-Romagna, Edoardo Amaldi embarked on his academic journey at the University of Rome, graduating in 1929. He remained at the university, ascending to the position of professor in 1937.
Academic and Research Career
Amaldi's exceptional talent propelled him to become the Director of the Institute of Physics at the University of Rome from 1949 to 1960. Concurrently, he held the roles of Director of the Center for Nuclear Physics (1945-1952) and the National Institute of Nuclear Physics (1952-1960). His research pursuits extended to CERN, where he made significant contributions.
Scientific Contributions
Amaldi's research encompassed atomic spectroscopy, neutron physics, elementary particle physics, and cosmic rays. As part of Enrico Fermi's group, he played a pivotal role in the groundbreaking discovery of neutron slowing down in 1934.
He demonstrated the existence of selective neutron absorption in 1936, further delving into the emission of gamma rays and internal conversion electrons during neutron capture. Together with Fermi, he conducted pioneering measurements on the neutron capture cross-section of protons.
Amaldi's groundbreaking contributions continued with the experimental evidence he provided for the existence of the antiproton in 1955. As part of a large research team, he participated in the discovery of the anti-sigma-plus hyperon in 1960.
International Recognition
Amaldi's scientific prowess earned him membership in prestigious scientific societies, including the Accademia dei Lincei (1948) and the Soviet Academy of Sciences (1958). He served as President of the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics from 1957 to 1960.
Legacy and Honors
In recognition of Amaldi's extraordinary contributions to science, the "Edoardo Amaldi" satellite was successfully launched into orbit, carrying his name to the celestial realm.
