Cardinal Marc Ouellet
Cardinal Marc Ouellet, a Canadian prelate, is a member of the Society of Saint-Sulpice. Throughout his career, he has held various positions in the Catholic Church, both in Canada and at the Vatican.
Early Life and Ordination
Marc Ouellet was born in La Motte, Quebec, Canada, on June 8, 1944. He completed his philosophical studies at the Grand Séminaire de Montréal and attended the International Seminary of Saint-Sulpice in Issy-les-Moulineaux, France. He was ordained a priest of the Society of Saint-Sulpice on May 23, 1972.
Episcopal Career in Canada
Ouellet served as Bishop of Saint-Paul, Alberta, from 1969 to 1972. In 1983, he was appointed Titular Bishop of Justiniana and Pro-President of the Pontifical Council for the Family.
Curia Cardinal
On May 25, 1985, Ouellet was created Cardinal-Deacon of Sant'Elena fuori Porta Prenestina by Pope John Paul II. He served as President of the Pontifical Council for the Family from 1985 to 1990. Subsequently, he was appointed President of the Pontifical Committee for International Eucharistic Congresses, a position he held from 1991 to 2001.
Cardinal-Priest
In 1996, Ouellet was elevated to the rank of Cardinal-Priest and assigned the titular church of San Marcello. He has participated in various synods and councils, including the papal conclaves of 2005 and 2013.
Prefect of the Congregation for Bishops
On June 30, 2010, Pope Benedict XVI appointed Cardinal Ouellet as Prefect of the Congregation for Bishops. In this role, he is responsible for overseeing the appointment of bishops worldwide.
