Edouard Ngirente: Prime Minister of Rwanda
Premier of RwandaEdouard Ngirente has served as the Prime Minister of Rwanda since August 30, 2017. He is an economist, academic, and a Hutu.
Education and Career
Ngirente earned his undergraduate degree in economics from the National University of Rwanda. He later obtained a doctorate in economics from the Catholic University of Leuven in Belgium.
Academic and Advisory Roles
Prior to entering government, Ngirente held various academic and advisory positions. He was a senior lecturer and head of the Department of Agricultural Economics at the National University of Rwanda. He also served as an independent consultant and project leader.
Work at the World Bank
From 2011 to 2017, Ngirente worked at the World Bank as an advisor to the Executive Director and as a Senior Advisor to the Executive Director in Washington, D.C.
Return to Rwanda
Upon returning to Rwanda, Ngirente served as Senior Economic Advisor to the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning. He also led the Department of Planning and Policy Research within the ministry.
Appointment as Prime Minister
On August 30, 2017, Ngirente was appointed Prime Minister of Rwanda by President Paul Kagame. He has since been responsible for leading the government's economic and social policies.
