Early Life and CareerEdson Isidoro Guimarães was born in 1957 in Brazil. He worked as a nurse at Salgado Filho Hospital in Rio de Janeiro.
The Killing Spree
In 1999, Guimarães was arrested after an orderly witnessed him injecting a comatose patient with potassium chloride, causing the person's immediate death. Investigation revealed an unusually high death rate among his patients. He confessed to five murders.
Motive and Victims
Guimarães claimed to be motivated by compassion, targeting patients he believed were suffering from unbearable pain and had no hope of recovery. He admitted removing oxygen masks from five patients, who were primarily in the terminal stages of AIDS.
Trial and Conviction
On February 21, 2000, Guimarães was convicted of four murders and sentenced to 76 years in prison.
Suspected Body Count
Guimarães is suspected of killing up to 131 patients between January 1 and May 4, 1999. He confessed to informing funeral homes about deaths in exchange for $60 payments, suggesting a financial incentive may have played a role in the killings.
