Early Life and Military Education
Eduard von Böhm-Ermolli was born into a military family and received his military education at the cadet academy in Sankt Pölten and the Theresian Military Academy.
Service in the Cavalry and General Staff
In 1875, Böhm-Ermolli was commissioned as a lieutenant in the 4th Dragoon Regiment. He later graduated from the General Staff Academy in 1878 and served in the General Staff from 1880 onwards. From 1891, he was employed in the Cavalry Inspectorate.
Command Positions
In 1896, Böhm-Ermolli became the commander of the 3rd Uhlan Regiment. He subsequently held command of the 16th Cavalry Brigade in Bratislava from 1901 and the Cavalry Division in Krakow from November 1905.
Infantry Commander
In April 1909, Böhm-Ermolli took command of the 12th Infantry Division. From November 1911, he was the commander of the I Army Corps in Krakow.
World War I
With the outbreak of World War I, Böhm-Ermolli was appointed commander of the 2nd Army, which he commanded until May 1918. His army was initially deployed to invade Serbia but was soon recalled to the Eastern Front to defend against the Russian offensive in Galicia. He led his army in the Carpathian Operation, the Austro-German Offensive of 1915, and the Russian Offensive of 1916.
Honors and Retirement
In August 1917, Böhm-Ermolli was awarded the title of Baron. In January 1918, he was promoted to Field Marshal. After the war, he settled in Opava (Troppau) in Czechoslovakia. Following the annexation of the Sudetenland by Germany in 1938, he was granted the honorary rank of Field Marshal of the Wehrmacht, the only Austrian commander to receive such a distinction.
