Early Life and Education

Mykolas Dakša was born in Lithuania and received his early education at gymnasiums in Kaunas and Slutsk (1852-1854). He furthered his studies at Moscow University (1854-1856), Dorpat University (1856-1857), and later pursued philology and philosophy at Königsberg University (1858-1862).

University Years

During his university years, Dakša penned poetry in both Lithuanian and Polish. Notably, he became one of the first translators of Adam Mickiewicz's works into Lithuanian.

Participation in the Uprising

Dakša's life took a dramatic turn when he joined the Polish Uprising of 1863. This decision led to his exile to Siberia in 1864.

Return to Lithuania

After spending two decades in exile, Dakša returned to Lithuania in 1884. However, his later years were marred by financial struggles and a lack of steady employment.

Literary Contributions

Dakša's literary legacy includes his own poetry, which was published posthumously in 1926. He was also an accomplished translator, bringing the works of Mickiewicz and others to a Lithuanian audience.
