His father, Frank Goldsmith, was a wealthy financier and Conservative MP, while his brother, James Goldsmith, became a successful financier. The Ecologist and Environmental Advocacy
In 1970, Goldsmith co-founded the influential environmental magazine The Ecologist, serving as its editor and publisher. Through this platform, he championed the values of indigenous peoples and became a vocal critic of industrial society's destructive impact on the natural world. He played a key role in the creation of Blueprint for Survival, a groundbreaking report on the state of the environment.

Goldsmith's commitment to environmentalism extended beyond writing. He co-founded the People Party (later renamed the Green Party of England and Wales) alongside Robert Prescott-Allen.
