Biography of Edward Lee Greene
Edward Lee Greene was an American botanist, taxonomist, and plant collector. He received his education at Albion College in Wisconsin in 1866. In 1871, he became a priest and lectured on botany at both the University of California and the University of California, Berkeley. In 1885, Greene decided to leave the priesthood and dedicate himself to teaching. He was a botany professor at the University of California until 1887, when he became an adjunct professor of botany and later a full professor in 1890.
In 1895, Greene earned a law degree from the University of Notre Dame in Indiana and moved to the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. He became the first professor of botany at the university and established a botanical garden. From 1904 until his death, Greene worked at the Smithsonian Institution.
Throughout his career, Greene focused on studying the flora of the western United States. He published numerous works on botany and the history of natural science, including the periodic publications "Pittonia" (1887-1905) and "Erythea" (which was released starting in 1893). His contributions to the field of botany were significant and continue to be influential in the study of plant taxonomy and classification.
