Biography of Edward Snowden

Edward Snowden, a 29-year-old information security specialist, has had a career in technical security where he has gained access to a significant amount of classified information. He has worked for the CIA and the NSA, among others. At a certain point, the information he encountered began to frighten him, as the government had launched projects that reminded him of George Orwell's "1984". In the end, Snowden decided to give up a successful career and a comfortable life, and potentially put his own existence at risk, all in order to expose government secrets to the world.

Snowden's decision was motivated by his unwillingness to live in a world where authorities could monitor every citizen's movements. He paid a high price for his pursuit of freedom, as he had to flee his home and country. Currently, he is hiding in Hong Kong, knowing that if he is extradited to the United States, he may never regain his freedom. Snowden also fears that the government might resort to more extreme measures to silence him. However, his desire to resist such total control proved stronger.

The information leaked by Snowden has already been dubbed the "most serious leak since WikiLeaks". Government officials and representatives from several internet companies have commented on the situation, but their statements have not provided much clarity. Internet companies have categorically denied their involvement in the "Prism" program, but not everyone believes their denials, as the direct participation of representatives from these companies is not necessarily required.

The authorities have commented on the situation more evasively. President Barack Obama admitted the existence of programs like Prism, but argued that the harm caused to American citizens' privacy is outweighed by the potential harm such information control can prevent. James Clapper, the Director of National Intelligence, even declassified some previously confidential documents to show that the scale of what had happened had been greatly exaggerated in the press. Clapper's response to the "leakers" was harsh and sarcastic, making him the person Snowden should fear the most.

It is uncertain how long Snowden will remain in Hong Kong. Currently, Hong Kong has an extradition agreement with the United States, which makes Snowden extremely vulnerable. He is considering finding refuge in another country that is more supportive of free speech and does not tolerate such interference in the lives of its citizens. At present, the NSA is closely monitoring Snowden's movements, even reaching out to his girlfriend. However, Snowden was aware of the risks from the beginning and was willing to risk everything to defend his own beliefs.
